    Conjugated Linoleic Acid

Many people today considered buying expensive conjugated linoleic acid or CLA for some of its benefits. The conjugated linoleic acid is basically a slightly distorted structure of linoleic acid, which is an omega-6 fatty acid that is essential for the human health.

Conjugated linoleic acid or the omega-6 fatty acids in general are particularly derived from the foods that we eat, more specifically from dairy products and meats. Today, the conjugated linoleic acid, due to some of the findings about its heath benefits, is offered in many health food outlets in a form of concentrated dietary supplement.

There are so many claims about the functions and uses of the conjugated linoleic acid. And one of the scientific interests in conjugated linoleic acid was first stimulated in the year 1988 when of the researchers in the University of Wisconsin found out that conjugated linoleic acid has cancer-fighting capabilities in the study conducted on rats fed with fried hamburger.

With the introduction of the conjugated linoleic acid in a supplement form, other extravagant speculations flourish stating that these compounds will help to build muscle, burn fat, and fight cancer. In fact, one of the clinical trials that have been conducted reported that rats and mice fed with conjugated linoleic acid supplement diets greatly experienced a somewhat reduction in the appetite and in the accumulated body fat. And interestingly, some were even observed a certain reduction in the onset of tumors.

As a support to the claim that the conjugated linoleic acid will decrease body fat in people who are overweight, it is considered in one of the double-blind and randomized placebo-controlled studies that an average reduction of about six pounds of body fat was observed in a "group" that accumulate conjugated linoleic acid supplement, compared to a placebo group. From such study, some of the experts found out that about 3.4 grams of the supplement every day is particularly the level that the body needs to take the valuable effects of the conjugated linoleic acid on body fat.

Aside from such claim, there are other studies in the past several years which found out that some of the other advantages of the compounds include the claims that it enhances the metabolic rate, reduces abdominal fat, improves the growth of muscles, lowers the cholesterol and triglycerides, lowers insulin resistance, decreases food-induced allergic reactions, and it elevates the immune system.

But even though there are some promising studies conducted for the past several years, there is really no exact findings that will show the real benefits of the conjugated linoleic acid to humans since the studies conducted have primarily been in small animals. Thus, it is still unclear whether humans will experience the same benefits.

However, it is still interesting to know that the conjugated linoleic acid, whether it is effective or not, cannot primarily be produced by the human body, rather this compound can be taken through foods like the whole milk, butter, lamb, and beef. So far, there is still too little studies that are made available to identify the danger for nutrient interactions with the supplements and if ever you are taking conjugated linoleic acid, it is then best to consult an expert.
